The Faces of Luminex: Carla Schneider, Area Business Director

Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: I lead a group of seven Molecular Business Managers who drive revenue for our Molecular Diagnostics product portfolio. Ultimately, our goal is to deliver solutions that help our customers improve patient health. We manage the sales process—everything including developing opportunities, engaging decision makers and influencers across our customer base, leveraging resources to successfully bring in new business, and implementing services with our Field Service and Molecular Applications Teams. We also oversee long-term customer success and satisfaction operations. My ultimate goal is to help people be successful—team members, peers, other people in the company I’ve mentored, and of course, our customers.

Q: What did you do before this job?

A: I’ve been in the clinical diagnostics industry for more than 20 years. Prior to Luminex, I worked at Thermo Fisher Scientific and Gen-Probe in a variety of roles, including Sales, Marketing, Sales and Applications Team Management, National and Corporate Accounts, and Sales Training Management.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: I was at a division of Thermo Fisher in 2008 when we launched the xTAG® Respiratory Viral Panel, which was manufactured by Luminex. At the time, I told friends and colleagues that I could see myself working for Luminex one day. I watched the company closely over the years, admiring its very successful life science business and the quickly growing clinical diagnostics portfolio. When a Luminex recruiter called me in late 2014, I was excited for the opportunity to join the outstanding leadership here and manage a Sales Team in the clinical market.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: If I could, I would tackle the addiction gene. Experts say alcoholism and addiction are 50% genetic and 50% environmental. If I could turn off that gene, that would be a dream come true. It kills people. I’ve seen that personally.

Q: If you weren’t an Area Business Director at Luminex, where would you be?

A: When I earned my degree in environmental science, I thought I was going to go and save the world. I would likely have ended up joining the Peace Corps with the goal of bringing clean water to third-world countries.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: Most people who see me in business attire would never guess that I went primitive backpacking on the Appalachian Trail for a week. It was amazing.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

A: I love being outside—hiking, kayaking, walking in the park—and spending time with my family and friends. I have three adopted children, and we love grilling outdoors. I also practice Bikram yoga regularly.
