Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: I manage the molecular business in south Florida. I support our current customers to make sure they have the testing they need, and also partner with new customers to help their labs meet their molecular testing goals.

Q: Where were you before?

A: I’ve had three different roles with Luminex, and before that I was a high school science teacher. I realized I loved talking about and teaching science more than sitting at a lab bench. During summers as a teacher, I would get different jobs in the science industry. One summer I saw that Luminex was looking for a technical applications trainer. I did not intend to leave teaching, but Luminex felt like such a good fit that my role here became a permanent position.

Q: So what’s worse, dealing with a grumpy high school student first thing in the morning or going through an employee review in a company?

A: Definitely the high school student in the morning! I loved being a teacher, but trying to engage a class of 30 teenagers at 8 a.m. is one of the most difficult things I’ve done.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: One of the things that caught my eye was their panel testing for respiratory pathogens and gastrointestinal pathogens. I think Luminex’s multiplexing technology is really great. It’s so useful to be able to test for many different pathogens from a single test to inform treatment.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about Luminex?

A: The company culture and the opportunities for growth. In the four and a half years I’ve been here, I have had the opportunity to grow in my career and take on new positions.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: One of the most interesting areas of science right now is understanding the gut microbiome and how that impacts our health. I would love to understand how the brain is tied to the gastrointestinal tract and figure out the impact that our microbiome has on our psychology.

Q: If you weren’t at Luminex, where would you be?

A: If I didn’t work in science, I would love to be a travel tour guide, taking groups of people on vacation tours to Europe. My favorite countries to visit are France and Italy.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: I lived in France for a few years when I was a kid. It was a great experience and I would love to live abroad again in the future.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

A: Hang out with my family and watch Tampa Bay Rays baseball. This year they were in the playoffs but they just lost and ended their season. Now it is back to BBQ and football.

New Call-to-action

The Faces of Luminex: Chad Powell, Sales

We consistently strive to deliver the best customer experience possible, and since our sales team is one of our customers’ first points of contact, it’s essential that they’re passionate about the industry we serve. Chad Powell, Senior Molecular Business Manager, partners with clinical labs, hospitals, and other healthcare providers, ensuring they know how much we value them. The Atlanta-area resident joined Luminex in 2018, holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from DePaul University, and is currently working toward an MBA from Kennesaw State University.

[thumbnail]

Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: We partner with different hospitals and labs to offer new ideas and solutions to better assist with patient care. We work closely with customers daily to meet their expectations and needs, and to make sure we’re addressing anything new that comes up. We also work with Field Service Engineers and Applications Specialists to provide the best experience we can.

Q: Where were you before?

A: Before Luminex, I was in a similar role at Thermo Fisher Scientific, working in diagnostics with hospitals and research facilities.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: At the time, I had mostly worked for large corporations. They were great, but I wanted to join a smaller company with a more entrepreneurial feel. I’m also really interested in cutting-edge technology, and Luminex was the perfect fit. With unique molecular diagnostic products, and as a midsize company, it was a place where I felt like people’s contributions would go a little further. I’m happy I made the switch.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about Luminex?

A: The people and customers I work with. Our team in the southeast is very collaborative and we’re constantly talking to each other. I feel like I learn something new every day. On a professional and personal level, I think I’ve grown more here than anywhere else.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: Cerebral palsy. My daughter was diagnosed with a very mild form of it from having a stroke at birth, and she has to go to therapy weekly. Seeing how other families with more severe cases have been affected really hits close to home.

Q: If you weren’t at Luminex, where would you be?

A: When I was 17 or 18, I lived in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, and I used to set up concerts for local bands. I thought I’d wind up in music management.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: My wife and I are creating a charity to help raise money for families to afford different orthotics and braces for children diagnosed with cerebral palsy. They can get really expensive—thousands of dollars per brace—and kids grow so fast you have to buy new ones fairly often. In the past couple of years, I’ve done runs to raise money or donated to other fundraisers, but now we want to do our own thing and have more control over where the money goes. The working name of our charity is the Birdie Foundation, after my daughter’s nickname.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

A: Since we just moved into a new neighborhood, our favorite thing right now is just exploring our neighborhood and city—meeting the neighbors, going to the pool, and trying out different restaurants.

The Faces of Luminex: Josh Griffith, Marketing

Throughout our product development cycles, we work closely with our customers to understand their needs and construct a solid understanding of our market. Josh Griffith, Senior Director of Marketing, Americas MDx, is one of our talented team members leading the way in crafting exceptional customer experiences. He joined Luminex in 2013 and holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Drew University.

[thumbnail]

Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: I lead a team of Marketing Managers and Clinical Implementation Managers. We’re the primary strategy and product support group for Luminex’s molecular diagnostics sales, focusing on the value of our products and how to position them. My team examines clinical, economic, and operational practices to better understand how our products can fit in the clinical lab. We perform competitive market analyses and revenue planning, and we also work on our internal national sales meeting, setting the agenda and plan for the year.

Q: Where were you before?

A: I came from Ventana, a division of Roche. I started in 2013 as a Sales Representative covering the New York City territory. Over the past few years at Luminex, I’ve been fortunate to experience multiple roles in our Marketing Team.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: I previously worked for a large company with a ton of processes. We were mainly defending our business from a sales perspective, and there wasn’t much growth or flexibility. I thought a midsize company might offer those growth opportunities and give me the chance to have a larger voice. In my interview with the Luminex hiring managers, the culture they described really attracted me. I liked how they approached the overall business and company strategy. Luminex is a flexible, dynamic company. At the time, we were launching our molecular diagnostic sales organization, so I had the opportunity to help shape our direction at the very beginning.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about Luminex?

A: For me, it’s the people. From the leadership team that I work with and support to the larger commercial organization, our group is on the same page from a cultural perspective. Everybody supports each other. It’s a highly collaborative environment, instead of the competitive dynamic you often see in Sales Teams.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: It’s a personal one—Alzheimer’s disease. I lost my grandmother to it. It strips away who you are slowly and relentlessly over time. A cure or even an effective diagnostic tool would be huge progress.

Q: If you weren’t at Luminex, where would you be?

A: I always kicked around the idea of being a college professor teaching world history.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: Most people don’t know that I sang in an a capella group for a period of time during college.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

A: Something outdoors! My wife and I love hiking, fishing in a nearby pond, or sitting outside reading by the fire pit.

New Call-to-action

The Faces of Luminex: Maria Escobar, Global Manufacturing and Quality

Some people have the uncanny ability to solve any problem they are presented with, no matter how big or small. This is particularly true for folks like Maria Escobar, Program Manager in Global Manufacturing and Quality Assurance Operations, who has worked on everything from integration processes and field quality to manufacturing and quality assurance throughout her 14-year career at Luminex.

Maria joined Luminex in 2007, holds a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Regis College, and is a testament to the power of perseverance.

[thumbnail]

Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: As a Program Manager, I harmonize processes and assist with various operations under Senior Vice President Randy Myers. Our team is responsible for moving projects forward, improving communication, bringing people across Luminex together, and finding creative solutions to issues that arise in our Manufacturing and Quality Assurance (QA) operations. Randy calls us his ninjas because of how much we coordinate and organize.

Where did you before you worked here?

A: Before Luminex, I worked in Research and Development at the Morehouse School of Medicine. I loved working in research! Unfortunately though, academic research relies on grant funding, so I had to look for another job.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: I realized that I didn’t have to go to medical school to help people—I could work for a biotech company and still make a difference in healthcare, which would have the kind of impact I wanted my work to have. So I was eager to get into the biotech industry. My interview at Luminex was the day I landed in Texas!

Q: How did you decide to move to Austin?

A: My sister is a Marine Corps veteran. She moved to Texas and had my two nephews. I wanted to be a present aunt—someone who could be there for baseball games and school plays. Family is so important. That’s how I ended up moving here from Boston, but now I could never go back. I don’t think I could even fathom having to shovel myself out my driveway before leaving the house again.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about Luminex?

A: My favorite part about my job is the people I work with. We’re like a family. When I was pregnant with my first child as a single mom, my colleagues had a baby shower for me, and I was amazed by how much support I received from all the people I had met here over the years. We have a great culture. People here really want the best for each other.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: Right now, I’d like for COVID-19 to go away. I don’t even need to fully understand the science behind it… I just want it gone. I want to hug people again!

Q: If you weren’t a program manager at Luminex, where would you be?

A: I would really enjoy being a motivational speaker.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: One of the things I don’t share enough is that I’m a first-generation immigrant and the first one in my family to graduate from college. I was born into a civil war in El Salvador and immigrating to the US wasn’t an easy process. Everyone experiences adversity, but I learned early on that with enough tenacity, we can get through anything.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do in Austin on the weekend?

A: I’m a foodie—I love that you can find any kind of food here. There’s really good Colombian, sushi, Thai, and, of course, barbecue. A lot of the food trucks in Austin mix cuisines to create interesting fusions, so it’s fun to try new flavors.

At Luminex, we really are a family. With offices in Austin, Chicago, Hong Kong, Madison, the Netherlands, Seattle, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Toronto and more than 1,400 people working together, we’re constantly improving on what it means to empower labs around the world to advance health and healthcare. The Faces of Luminex: Caleb White, Sales

Molecular diagnostics labs have specific needs, and our Molecular Diagnostics Sales Team members are experts in understanding how our products fit into unique workflows and testing environments. Caleb White, Molecular Sales Effectiveness Manager, ensures that our newest Sales Team members get up to speed with the training they need to provide an excellent customer experience. He’s been with Luminex since 2011 and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Roberts Wesleyan College.

[thumbnail]

Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: I’m responsible for the onboarding, training, and sales enablement for the Americas Molecular Diagnostics Sales Team. I assist with onboarding new salespeople from the interview process through training. I connect them with all the team members they’ll interact with at Luminex—Legal, Sales Support, Technical Services, HR, and more. I check in regularly as they go through field-based training and then provide a deeper dive into the product content in a classroom-style setting.

Q: How did you get into this kind of work?

A: My first real job out of college was working in consumer lending with a subsidiary of HSBC. My first job in medical sales was with Polymedco, which sold fecal occult blood tests. After that, I went to Nanosphere.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: I came to Luminex through its acquisition of Nanosphere. I was proud to be part of this acquisition as Luminex presented the opportunity to work with great people and to be at the forefront of rapid diagnostic testing for blood cultures.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: I’m most passionate about septicemia. Bloodstream infections hit close to home for me. I watched the market transform from culture to rapid results, and I saw and heard feedback from physicians and pharmacists on how they saved lives as a result of this technology. It was very rewarding and something I’ll always be proud of. A septic patient is typically the most critical patient in the hospital, and VERIGENE® results changed the speed to optimal therapy.

Q: If you weren’t a manager at Luminex, where would you be?

A: I originally wanted to be a prosecutor. I took my LSAT and got accepted to law school. But at the time, I was dating my now-wife, and we were already dating long-distance. I didn’t think I could be a newlywed and a law student. It was a Good Will Hunting thing—I had to see about a girl.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: I’m pretty big into saltwater fish tanks. I dabbled in them when I first got married 15 years ago, but it was a challenging hobby because proper filtration and other important technologies didn’t exist back then. Now, I have three boys, and one that is interested in science also wanted a pet. I knew how to put together a fish tank, so I figured we’d start with that. Now we have a 120-gallon reef tank with tropical fish and all kinds of coral.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do on the weekend?

A: I like to spend time with my kids at whatever sporting event they are participating in—wrestling, baseball, or football. If that’s not happening, my wife and I try to find a local coffee shop and hang out.

Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: I am responsible for all areas of sales and use tax, property tax, and gross receipts tax for our customers and Luminex. I also oversee state business registrations and new vendor setups. My team and I maintain our tax system to ensure taxes are correct on all customer invoices, and we work closely with the Billing and Order Management teams to address customer concerns. Additionally, we are responsible for making sure Luminex pays sales and use tax correctly on all purchases and that we are compliant in all states with property taxes.

Q: How did you get into this kind of work?

A: When I graduated college, my first job was on the Sales and Use Tax Team at Dell. After that, I worked for a hotel corporation where I was responsible for all property taxes there.

Q: Was there a learning curve when you changed industries?

A: Tax laws generally don’t change between industries. The way that the laws are applied may vary, so there are certain differences, but for the most part, taxes are basically the same wherever you go, so my expertise is transferrable across industries.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: I really liked that Luminex manufactures equipment that helps drive improvements in the medical field. It’s been great to see how we’ve been able to have a global impact with COVID-19.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: Given our current situation, I’d say COVID-19. It has really changed everybody’s life. The pandemic has been heartbreaking for so many families.

Q: If you weren’t a manager at Luminex, where would you be?

A: I probably would have pursued a career as a pediatrician.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: I really enjoy gardening! My grandmother had a big garden with lots of fruits and vegetables when I was growing up, and we liked to garden together. I’ve grown things like tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, and cucumbers.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do in Austin on the weekend?

A: Outside of the pandemic, my husband and I like to hang out with friends—one of our favorite places to go is the Domain.

New Call-to-action

The Faces of Luminex: Kris Hall, Field Quality

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) oversees approval of medications, vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other public health products. Long after instruments and assays are cleared for use, our teams continue to monitor their performance in the field. Field Quality Assurance Engineer Kris Hall, part of our Field Quality Team, helps ensure that our diagnostic products perform as expected in labs worldwide. Based out of our Austin office, Kris joined Luminex in 2010.

[thumbnail]

Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: My team and I are responsible for ensuring that the products we have in the field for clinical diagnostics meet every standard established by the FDA. Our job is to analyze data and trends to identify potential problems with an instrument or assay that’s been cleared for use. If a potential situation is identified, it’s my job to investigate what’s going on, determine the root cause of it, and institute a correction.

Q: How did you get into this kind of work?

A: I originally started on the manufacturing side of Luminex, making almost all of our reagents. That gave me a more quality-focused view about what we put into our products and inspired me to learn more about the quality sector in general.

Q: What did you do before you came to Luminex?

A: I worked at other biotech companies around Austin, making pharmaceuticals, assays, and instruments. I was a veterinary technician for four years before that. My original plan was to become a veterinarian, but working as a vet tech changed my perspective. There’s a lot of heartbreak in that line of work… I decided it wasn’t the life for me.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: When I first heard about Luminex, the company had begun making some waves in the biotech world. I also liked the idea of growing with a local startup company.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: I would eliminate cancer. I believe we’re on the cusp of getting there, but the impact of eliminating it as a health threat can’t be understated. I’d also like to remedy Alzheimer’s disease, which I’ve seen firsthand through my family. The emotional toll it takes on the person suffering and their family is devastating. If we could prevent Alzheimer’s, that would be a very close second choice for me.

Q: If you weren’t a Quality Engineer at Luminex, where would you be?

A: I would be a professional Formula One race car driver. I’ve done some amateur racing, and I love the thrill of driving at the absolute limit of what a car is capable of. Everything has to work perfectly. If one thing goes wrong with one of the millions of parts, the car crashes at 200 miles per hour. It’s absolute precision of engineering and manufacturing all around.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: I was state champion at bowling when I was in high school. My dad was a bowler, so I grew up going to the bowling alley from a very young age. He was an excellent coach. I have a couple of trophies buried away in boxes.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do in Austin on the weekend?

A: Going out to dinner. There are so many unique restaurants throughout Austin, so you can always go and find something new with almost any type of cuisine. My favorite food is Mexican, and since I’m from El Paso, I had access to the best Mexican food growing up. Trying to find the perfect enchilada is always on my mind, but I have yet to find that in Austin.

Also, my wife and I take our three-footed pit bull named Hobbes out whenever we can. When we got him from a local pit bull rescue, he was missing one of his back paws, so we had a prosthetic made and were surprised at how quickly he adapted to it. The first day we put it on him, he was running around like he’d always had it. It was incredible.

Want to be a Part of Our Team?

The Faces of Luminex: Heidi Boswell, User Enablement

User enablement is an essential component of an outstanding user experience. At Luminex, we take usability a step further by equipping our customers with the knowledge and training they need in order to get the most from our products.

Ensuring success is no easy task, but for people like Heidi Boswell, Senior Director of User Enablement, considering our users’ needs comes easily thanks to her background in technical training. Based out of our Austin office, Heidi manages the User Enablement Team and has been with Luminex since 2005.

[thumbnail]

Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: I lead the User Enablement Team; we equip our internal and external users with tools and training to be independently successful with our products. This starts by documenting and evaluating a user’s workflow during design and development. Our group also writes and develops educational classroom training, on-the-job resources, and technical documentation to ensure user success and safety. My role is to provide strategic direction, which I really enjoy.

Q: How did you get involved in User Enablement?

A: I came to Luminex straight out of college and started as a Technical Trainer. Over the years and with the support of management, I moved into progressively higher roles, taking on more responsibility along the way. We were a much smaller company when I started in 2005, so I‘ve grown a lot with Luminex. My focus has always been on finding opportunities to do more and to better support our users.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: I really liked Luminex’s global presence and the impact the company could have in the biotech industry. I was one of two trainers at the start, so traveling the world was also really exciting to me.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: I would find a cure for cerebral palsy. My son had an in utero stroke and was diagnosed with a very mild type of CP, so this is near and dear to my heart.

Q: If you weren’t working in your current role at Luminex, what would you be doing?

A: If I weren’t at Luminex, I would probably do something in wildlife management and hunting. I grew up in a tiny Texas town with less than 300 people. My family really lived on the land, harvesting food from our garden and hunting—it’s family tradition. My husband and I dream of running a hunting operation with wildlife conservation education.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: People are usually surprised to learn that I grew up hunting and fishing. Deer hunting was big in our family—we never went to the store to buy meat. It was a big event, our whole family got together to prepare a meal to feed everyone.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do in Austin on the weekend?

A: My husband’s always been a golfer, but during the pandemic, my son and I really got into golf too. It was a great way to get outside as a family. Now, if we have a free minute on the weekend, we’re playing golf.

The Faces of Luminex: Curtis Ford, Engineering

It might not be rocket science, but former aerospace engineer Curtis Ford shares how his background across two important fields in engineering led to his career here, where he helps oversee the quality of Luminex products.

Because high-quality products require premium parts, what we don’t manufacture ourselves must be sourced from trusted suppliers—that’s where Curtis comes in. As a Supplier Quality Engineer, he monitors the quality of supplier-sourced parts, helping ensure our products meet the high standards we’ve set for them. Curtis joined the Luminex family in 2018 and holds a bachelor’s degree in manufacturing engineering from Boston University.

[thumbnail]
Q: What are your responsibilities at Luminex?

A: Many of the parts used in Manufacturing are made by suppliers—things like printed circuit boards, lasers, chassis, connectors, and computer hard drives—so it’s important that we have a rigorous process for monitoring supplier quality to ensure every part meets our product specification requirements. I am responsible for this process, ensuring that parts from our suppliers meet applicable quality assurance (QA) levels and good manufacturing practice (GMP) requirements.

Q: What did you do before this job?

A: I was a Process Quality Engineer. I have worked in both aerospace and medical products engineering.

Q: How did you get into engineering?

A: I’m a product of the Apollo era at NASA. I used to watch those launches with so much interest. My dad worked as a technician on the lunar module vehicle for Northrop Grumman Space Systems and was always involved in technical stuff, so he inspired me to pursue my engineering interests. The high school I went to, Brooklyn Tech, was also heavily focused on engineering, manufacturing, and science.

Q: What drew you to Luminex?

A: I worked in the medical field at Johnson & Johnson before working in the aerospace industry for some time and I wanted to return to it. I’ve always wanted to be involved in building products that help people, and I enjoy knowing that our products help save lives.

Q: If you could solve any clinical or genetic challenge, what would it be?

A: I would find a cure for cancer. I am a prostate cancer survivor, and my wife is a colon cancer survivor, so it has affected my family deeply. I am happy to report that we both recovered, and due to early detection, we both remain 100 percent active and healthy.

Q: If you weren’t an engineer at Luminex, where would you be?

A: I would be a historian! I would love to write a book focused on African American soldiers and sailors in the Civil War. My father was a World War II Navy veteran, and there’s some Civil War history in my wife’s family—specifically the Massachusetts 54th Colored Regiment, which fought at Fort Wagner, South Carolina.

Q: What is something about you that no one at Luminex knows?

A: I am an election judge for Guadalupe County, which means I’ve taken an oath to uphold legal requirements that ensure all eligible citizens in Texas are able to vote for the candidate of their choice, regardless of race, religion, gender, creed, sexual orientation, and/or physical ability. The protests this year over the discrimination African Americans face inspired me to help ensure that everyone who wants to vote has access to their polling places. Everyone’s voice should count towards determining their elected officials—from the local district attorney to the president of the United States.

Q: What is your favorite thing to do in Austin on the weekend?

A: Attend concerts or music festivals, like Austin City Limits. They’ve had performers as diverse as Willie Nelson, Stevie Wonder, Gary Clark Jr., the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Paul McCartney, to name a few. When I moved here, it quickly became apparent why Austin is considered the live music capital of the world.
