Grant writing can be difficult, yet it is a reality of life in the scientific community and an important foundation for many users of xMAP® Technology. To help you prepare your next proposal, here is a quick look at the grant process as well as several useful resources.
Regardless of funding source, you’ll need to have a solid plan in place to help grant reviewers or fund managers understand your goals and decide whether to approve the proposal. Map out what you’d like to do, how much it will cost, and why it matters — not just how you’d describe it to another scientist, but to a friend or family member in a completely different industry. Being able to point to the full impact of your project in a digestible way is important for anyone who will review your proposal.
When it comes to grant funding, most scientists in the US think first of the National Institutes of Health. But there are plenty of other great sources of science funding, and your proposal may face less competition at those agencies. Consider your research objective, and then take some time to determine which agency or agencies provide funding for that area. Unfortunately, it’s not enough to come up with a great idea for a project — you also have to match it to a specific grant opportunity. Review lists of open funding opportunities at grants.gov and SAM.gov.
Each grant opportunity will include a number of requirements — some about the research area being funded, and others about the specifics of the application itself. Be sure to review and comply with all of them! Program officers have a keen eye for detail, you don’t want your otherwise perfect proposal rejected because you used the wrong font size or failed to include a certain line item in your budget. Check, re-check, and then check again before sending in your application. If you have any questions, contact the program officer to clarify things before you proceed.
Be patient while waiting to hear the status of your proposal. Some agencies move more slowly than others, and your proposal may need to go through multiple rounds of review before you get a decision. Be prepared to provide additional information in a timely manner if requested.
Government grant opportunities are incredibly competitive, so don’t be discouraged if your application isn’t selected. But if things do go well and your proposal is funded, congratulations! Each agency will require certain types of reports or updates as you proceed with your project. Keep in touch with your program officer to make sure you know what’s needed and when.
